A TARDIS se materializa no México durante a civilização asteca. O Doctor e seus companions saem para descobrir que estão dentro de uma tumba - a tumba de Yetaxa, que uma vez foi Alto Sacerdote dos Astecas.
Barbara é saudada como a reencarnação de Yetaxa por Autloc, Alto Sacerdote do Conhecimento, e Tlotoxl, Alto Sacerdote do Sacrifício, quando eles a encontram nos arredores da tumba usando o bracelete do Sacerdote falecido, agora reverenciado como um deus.
E ela toma vantagem de sua posição de poder para tentar dissuadir os astecas de praticar sacrifícios humanos...
