The Christmas Invasion foi o primeiro episódio de Doctor Who a estrear no dia de Natal, desde "The Feast of Steven", a sétima parte do arco épico de doze episódios, The Daleks' Master Plan, de 1966. No entanto, ao contrário daquele episódio, The Christmas Invasion foi especialmente encomendada pela BBC One para ser transmitido fora da temporada regular do programa. Foi assim o primeiro da tradição moderna de "especial de Natal", e sua duração de sessenta minutos foi o mais longo produzido até a época pela BBC do País de Gales.
Narrativamente, continuou a história de Harriet Jones, começou o arcoTorchwood e a UNIT fez sua primeira grande aparição na série nova.
Mais importante, ele foi a primeira história completa para apresentar o Décimo Doctor, interpretado por David Tennant. Sua seqüência de títulos pré-inicial na Powell Estate foi usada mais tarde para "delimitar" as cenas finais de The End of Time.
