The Edge of Destruction é o terceiro arco de histórias da primeira temporada de Doctor Who. Esta história é única na Série Clássica por se situar inteiramente na TARDIS e apresentar somente membros do elenco regular.
A BBC inicialmente pediu quatro episódios de Doctor Who. No meio da produção de An Unearthly Child, este número foi aumentado para treze. Juntos, An Unearthly Child e The Daleks só somaram onze. Com um orçamento minúsculo, The Edge of Destruction foi pedido para preencher dois episódios restantes e preencher a temporada.
Narrativamente, a história foi crucial já que seus eventos mostram como os viajantes não são mais pessoas forçadas a ficar juntos, mas um grupo que poderia confiar um no outro. Ela também oferece o primeiro indício de que a TARDIS do Doctor não era própria dele, mostrado por sua falta de compreensão das habilidades dela. Finalmente, foi também a primeiro momento que o Doctor citou figuras históricas.

À medida que lentamente se recuperam do choque de serem atirados ao chão da TARDIS, o Doctor, Susan, Ian e Barbara parecem estar agindo de forma estranha. Ocorrem eventos inexplicáveis e suspeitas são levantadas de que uma força alienígena possa ter entrado no nave. O Doctor ainda acusa Ian e Barbara de sabotagem.
