Regenerarea este un proces prin care Lorzi ai Timpului se ”reînnoiesc”, cauzînd o schimbare completă din punct de vedere atît fizic, cît și adesea psihic. Poate rezulta din cauza unei boli crunte (TV: The Tenth Planet, Planet of the Spiders, The Caves of Androzani, The End of Time, Day of the Moon) sau a unei răni (TV: Logopolis, Time and the Rani, Doctor Who, Utopia, Let's Kill Hitler). Poate fi activată și de persoana care este supusă procesului, fie voluntar sau involuntar (TV: The War Games, Destiny of the Daleks) Uneori, poate fi oprită voluntar. (TV: Last of the Time Lords).
